Freelance writer and journalist

When you need a freelance writer for a corporate newsletter, feature story, media release or an editorial, my years of experience in daily newspapers and trade publications ensure you get high quality copy that’s accurately targeted at your audience.

If your own copy needs an edit, a polish or a little streamlining, I’ll turn it into a very professional document.

My skills were honed as a regular contributor to the Sydney Morning Herald for nearly a decade. I wrote a number of cover stories for ‘Enterprise’, the special business report in the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. As a freelance writer, I’ve covered issues including small business, management, executive education, franchising, marketing, the meetings industry, HR, career development, business coaching and succession planning.

Proofreading and editing services

Many documents and reports need proofreading or an editor’s critical eye, even if only for a final check of style, grammar, spelling, consistency and a little professional polish.

Others need a more extensive make-over, particularly if a number of authors have contributed different sections for a report. Each will have their own writing style, use of spelling (was that UK, US or Australian English you wanted? ), punctuation and formatting for headlines, tables and bulleted or numbered lists.

My role is to resolve issues of style and consistency with you, document everything on a style sheet, then deliver a document which reads smoothly, clearly and coherently from start to finish. As a former magazine editor and a working journalist today, I’m accustomed to the tight deadlines and fast turnarounds associated with tender documents and expressions of interest.

Proofreading and editing projects for clients include:

  • In 2022, editing 15,000 words of text for Melbourne artist Di Bresciani’s new art book, plus writing her personal profile.
  • In 2021, for Falkiner Media Services, editing a communications handbook for the Australian Business Deans’ Council.
  • The 2015/16 annual report for The Sovereign Hill Museums Association
  • A lengthy report for the World Health Organisation, with urgent turnaround, in 2014.

  • Editing the 2013 and 2014 annual reports for Helen Macpherson Smith Trust.
  • The draft Economic Strategy for the City of Moonee Valley, in 2013.
  • A number of entries in the 2012 and 2013 Victorian Public Healthcare Awards.
  • A report to the Victorian Government by consultants PricewaterhouseCoopers.
  • A 2013 summary of major arts strategy reports and plans for the Frankston City Council.
  • Two Expressions of Interest by a Melbourne property development group for major development projects.
  • A Business Information Document aimed to generate interest in investing in a complementary and alternative medicine opportunity.
  • A corporate profile for E K Project & Construction Management Pty Ltd.
  • The 2010 TAFE courses directory for the Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development.
  • An EOI for Fulton Hogan Pty Ltd.
  • The 2010 Open Space Water Management Plan, Port Phillip Council.
  • Two reports for the National Transport Commission in 2011.

I am a qualified trainer (Certificate IV in Workplace Assessment and Training from RMIT University), and so am well-equipped to edit training material.

Testimonials

Thank you so much for the great article in the SMH on Saturday. It really expressed what Shirlaws is about, so thank you for putting pen to paper so well. Everyone in the group thought it was great and we have already had a number of people contact us after reading the article.

Darren Shirlaw, Managing Partner, Shirlaws

Environment and sustainability writer

Climate change has put increasing pressure on major organisations to develop and promote their sustainability strategies. Two cover stories for the Sydney Morning Herald’s ‘Enterprise’ reports fostered my interest in researching and writing about the environment and sustainability. Since then, I’ve written case studies, web content, brochures and e-newsletters for the Environment Protection Authority Victoria, an extensive case study for Monash Business Review on EPA Victoria achieving carbon neutral status, a number of case studies on the Australian Industry Group’s sustainability covenant with industry, case studies for the Plastics and Chemical Industry Association and for Austrade on the ‘blue economy’.
